Special Needs Dogs While all animals and people have "special needs" due to their individuality and preferences, we're highlighting these sweethearts below for extra attention. They need heroes to help them recover and bloom, and each bears the greatest gift -- unconditional love -- for the person or couple willing and able to rise to the challenge for their loving care with a lifetime commitment. |

Bacall She has a gentle soul and tender nature. She is most likely an Aussie Shepherd mix, at least 10 yrs of age. She LOVES other dogs. Her soul-mate, Bogey, passed away from old age (cancer), so we are giving her extra special attention and bonding her here with other dogs (including Marley and other seniors) so she doesn't get sick from a broken heart. She needs a home where she will be with at least one other dog. She is mild-mannered, sweet, and unimposing, and she certainly deserves to spend her final time (years or months) on Earth with dignity in a loving family. |

Little Duke He is not suffering, but he has challenges and needs a hero. He is a Miniature Schnauzer puppy, 10 months young, housetrained, and fine with mature kids. He LOVES other dogs & needs to be in a home with another dog. He has neurological damage, either from birth or from an accident or abuse. In addition, he has reportedly had seizures, but the seizure prevention medication makes him ill. Please consult with your veterinarian for guidance on options to keep him comfortable & safe. |

Miss Universe Her survival and improvements are miraculous, attesting to her beautiful spirit and will to live. She is an exceptionally sweet Bully mix puppy, approximately 6 months young. She arrived to us months ago, just weeks old with extreme mange and sick with the deadly parvo virus. It has taken a few months of wonderful care, but she is now ready for adoption and her whole life is brightly ahead for her to look forward to. Her remaining special needs are for her allergies, so she eats a special diet (hypoallergenic food), takes daily medication (Benadryl), and weekly medicated baths (at least in the short term). |

Elvis He has an entertaining personality and loves to be the center of attention. He is most likely a Toy Poodle mix, approximately 5 years of age. He is housetrained, crate-trained, good with mature kids, and good with other dogs. A veterinarian believes he has epilepsy. Fortunately, seizures can generally be eliminated or reduced with very inexpensive medication (only $10 or so per month) that he will need for the rest of his life. He will go home with medication at the time of his adoption to ensure there is no interruption. |

Kirby Kirby is a complete sweetheart. He is a "Lhasa Poo" (Lhasa Apso & Poodle) full of many great qualities, including being good with other dogs, and housetrained too. He is a senior, approximately 10 pounds. His special needs are due to his heart murmur, so he needs a quieter lifestyle, with only light exercise, and very limited exposure to high temperatures. He will be perfect cuddling with you on the sofa watching movies or reading a book. |

Tank He is a loving boy, fine with cats & dogs, and fine at his previous home until his owner became pregnant, then he began marking the house & acting up. He is a Jack Russell Terrier, 5 years of age, and housetrained. He is very sensitive to change, so imagine how frightened he is now that he lost a loving home. And his only defense right now is snapping and nipping. He will shine again, but it will take an adult-only home with experience, patience, and a stable routine. |

Minnie Wu What happens when you put an angel on a chain outside to fend for herself in the elements, swarms of flies biting and wounding her ears, and left unloved and without attention? This young medium-size Heinz 57 girl is full of potential, but as the victim of extreme neglect, her recovery will take a long time and enormous patience in a stable, adult-only home. Minnie Wu is approximately 3 years of age. |

Dawnielle She's a big kisser, affectionate and very friendly . . . to human women. But human males cause her fear and distress. Her special need is that she takes on the role of 'protector' when she's with women and may trip to nip or warn off men. But in an experienced home, with patience and training to help her realize her "job" is to have fun & be part of the family, this behavior can be curbed. She's a Boxer mix, approximately 3 years young. |

Sandy For several months this three-year old girl survived on a golf course in a feral state, afraid of everyone. One of our staff caught her (and the rescue alone would be a great movie!) and trust has been slowly building since. She's a big hugger, a chocolate tuxedo Bully mix, with stunning gold eyes. Her special needs include: needing continued training (free for her at the SPCA), very close supervision because she can jump walls, and she's best as the only pet. She needs a real hero! |
