The question we hear more than almost any other from people who want to help is, “I’d love to foster, but I already have a cat and/or dog at home. Is that a dealbreaker?”

The short answer is that it usually isn’t. Having resident dogs or cats doesn’t mean you can’t foster a cat or kitten in need. In fact, experienced pet owners often make some of the best foster parents because they already understand animal behavior, routines, and care. With a little preparation, proper quarantine protocols, and patient introductions, you can safely welcome foster pets into your home without disrupting your resident animals’ lives.

Setting Up a Dedicated Sanctuary Space

The key to successfully fostering when you already have pets is creating a designated sanctuary space. This separate room acts as a safe haven where your foster cat can decompress, adjust to new scents, and feel secure away from your resident animals.

A spare bedroom, home office, or large bathroom works perfectly as a temporary foster suite. Equipping this space with a cozy bed, litter box, food, water, scratching post, and interactive toys gives your guest everything they need. Keeping your foster cat isolated for the first week or two is essential for their emotional well-being. It gives them a quiet environment to adjust to your home’s routine while preventing visual contact with your current pets, which reduces stress for everyone involved.

Prioritizing Health Checks and Medical Quarantine

Before you decide to foster a kitten or adult cat, keeping your resident pets healthy is top priority. Shelter animals receive medical exams, vaccinations, and parasite treatments, but temporary quarantine is still a critical step in responsible fostering.

Keeping your foster guest in their sanctuary room for at least 10 to 14 days allows time to monitor for common illnesses, such as upper respiratory infections or ringworm. Always make sure your resident pets are up to date on their core vaccinations, flea preventatives, and annual wellness exams before bringing a new animal home. Washing your hands after handling your foster cat and using separate bowls and litter scoops ensures all pets stay healthy and protected.

Step-by-Step Introductions for Resident Animals

Once your foster cat has settled in, you can begin gradual, controlled introductions. Never rush this process; allowing animals to set the pace ensures positive, stress-free interactions.

Start with scent swapping. Rub a towel on your foster cat and place it near your resident pet’s food bowl, and vice versa. This helps both animals associate each other’s scent with positive experiences like mealtime. Next, allow visual introductions through a cracked door, baby gate, or screen door so they can see each other without physical contact. If your resident pet is a dog, keep them on a leash during initial face-to-face meetings and reward calm behavior with treats. If you’re introducing resident cats, brief, supervised interactions will help them adjust naturally without territorial friction.

Work up to supervised time in the same room, always with an easy exit and a high perch available. Hissing and posturing are normal. Sustained growling, cornering, or a cat who stops eating means you’ve moved too fast, so back up a step and slow down.

How to Get Started with Nevada SPCA’s Foster Program

Fostering is one of the most impactful ways to help local animals. When you decide to foster a cat or litter of kittens through Nevada SPCA, our shelter team provides all the supplies you need, including food, litter, crates, toys, and full veterinary care. All you need to supply is a safe space and plenty of love.

If you aren’t in a position to foster right now, there are still plenty of ways to help. You can support our shelter by joining an animal rescue fundraiser, donating items from our wish list, or signing up as a pet shelter volunteer. Whether you choose to volunteer with cats at our shelter or foster a kitten in your home, your dedication helps us save more lives every single day.
