Deciding to adopt a cat when you already have one at home is an exciting step, and it’s one many families take successfully every year. Cats are territorial by nature, however, so the way you handle those first few weeks can shape how your pets feel about each other for years to come. A slow, thoughtful introduction gives both cats the time they need to adjust, and it greatly improves the odds that they’ll end up sharing sunny windowsills instead of tolerating each other at a distance. At Nevada SPCA, we help families bring home new feline companions all the time, and these are the steps we recommend.

Step 1: Prepare a Separate Space

Before your new cat comes home, set up a private room where they can settle in without any contact with your current cat. A spare bedroom, office, or bathroom works well as long as it has everything your new cat needs, including a litter box, food and water bowls, a scratching post, a cozy bed, and a few places to hide. This room gives your new arrival a safe home base while they get used to unfamiliar sounds and smells, and it lets your current cat keep the rest of the house as usual.

It’s also a good idea to make sure both cats are up to date on veterinary care before they meet, since a quick checkup helps protect everyone’s health.

Step 2: Let Them Get to Know Each Other by Scent

Cats rely heavily on scent, so smell is the best place to start. For the first several days, swap bedding or blankets between the two cats so each one can investigate the other’s scent at their own pace. For example, you can gently rub a clean sock on one cat’s cheeks and leave it near the other cat’s food bowl.

Once both cats seem relaxed around these items, try feeding them on opposite sides of the closed door. Mealtime creates a positive association with the other cat’s presence, and you can move the bowls a little closer to the door each day as they grow more comfortable.

Step 3: Swap Spaces

After a few days of calm scent exchanges, let your new cat explore the rest of the house while your resident cat spends some time in the new cat’s room. This allows each cat to take in the other’s scent throughout the home without any pressure of a face-to-face meeting, and it helps your new cat learn the layout of their new surroundings.

Step 4: Introduce Them by Sight

When neither cat is reacting strongly to the other’s scent, you’re ready for a visual introduction. Place a baby gate or a tall pet gate in the doorway, or crack the door open just a few inches, and let the cats see each other during a meal or play session. Keep these first sightings short, and end them on a positive note with treats or a favorite toy.

A little hissing or staring is normal at this stage. However, flattened ears, growling, or swatting are signs that one or both cats need more time, so step back to the previous stage for a few days before trying again.

Step 5: Supervise Short Meetings

Once your cats can see each other calmly, open the door and let them share the same room while you supervise. Start with a few minutes at a time, and gradually build up to longer visits. Interactive toys like wand teasers are a great way to keep both cats engaged and focused on something fun rather than on each other. Continue separating them when you can’t keep an eye on them until you’re confident they’re getting along.

Set Your Home Up for Success

Even after a smooth introduction, a few simple habits help keep the peace. Provide one litter box per cat, set up separate feeding stations, and add vertical spaces like cat trees and shelves so each cat can claim its own territory.

Most importantly, be patient. Some cats become fast friends within a week, while others need a month or more to feel settled, and every pair moves at its own pace.
