Every year, like clockwork, animal shelters across the country brace for the same phenomenon: kittens. Lots and lots of kittens. It’s called kitten season, and here in Southern Nevada it stretches from early spring well into fall, with summer as the peak. During these months, shelters and rescue groups take in more kittens than at any other time of year, and many of them are too young to be adopted right away.

That’s exactly where foster families come in. If you’ve ever thought about helping animals in a hands-on way, there’s no better time to foster a kitten than right now. Here’s what kitten season is, why it happens, and why opening space in your home could save a tiny life this summer.

What Exactly Is Kitten Season?

Kitten season is the time of year when cats give birth in large numbers, driven by warmer weather and longer daylight hours. Unspayed outdoor and community cats can have multiple litters in a single season, and each litter can mean four to six kittens. Multiply that across an entire valley, and the math gets overwhelming fast.

The result is a wave of kittens arriving at every animal shelter and animal rescue in the region, often as orphaned litters found without a mom, or as very young kittens who simply aren’t old enough for adoption yet. Kittens can’t be spayed, neutered, and adopted out until they’re around eight weeks old and two pounds, which means every underage kitten needs somewhere safe to grow first.

Why Shelters Need Foster Homes Most in Summer

A shelter is a wonderful safety net, but it’s not the ideal place for a fragile kitten to spend their first weeks of life. Young kittens have developing immune systems, need warmth and quiet, and the littlest ones need round-the-clock bottle feeding. A calm foster home gives them what a strained shelter environment often can’t, like individual attention, safe socialization with people, and a healthy head start before adoption.

Fostering also does something bigger. Every kitten in a foster home frees up shelter space and staff time for another animal in need. During the busiest months of the year, foster families are what makes it possible for a no-kill shelter to keep saying yes to the animals who need help.

What Fostering a Kitten Actually Involves

What surprises most people is that fostering is easier than you’d think. When you foster a kitten through Nevada SPCA, we provide the supplies and cover the medical care. Your job is the fun part: feeding, snuggling, playing, and helping your foster kitten grow into a confident, people-loving cat.

Foster commitments are temporary, often just a few weeks until a kitten reaches adoption weight. Some litters come with a mama cat who does most of the work herself, while bottle babies need more hands-on care for those who want a bigger challenge. You don’t need experience, a big house, or endless free time. A spare bathroom, a little patience, and a soft heart go a long way.

We know the question you’re already asking: What if I fall in love? It happens, and “foster fails” who decide to adopt their foster kitten are always a happy ending. But saying goodbye is a happy ending too, because it means you’re ready to save the next one. There’s no wrong answer when it comes to giving a kitten a safe home.

Open Your Home This Summer

Kitten season is our busiest, most challenging time of year, and it’s also when one person can make the biggest difference. If you’re ready to foster a kitten with Nevada SPCA, Southern Nevada’s original no-kill shelter, apply to become a foster family today. A tiny life is waiting on you.
