Foster to Adopt Program

Nevada SPCA’s Foster to Adopt Program helps the shelter secure more loving homes to pets that are not big or old enough for spays or neuters. It is crucial that young puppies and kittens do not spend their developing months in the shelter system and placing them in homes until they are ready for surgery allows the shelter to help more animals in need.

The Foster to Adopt program are for individuals or families to foster a pet they intend on adopting. This helps our normal foster program focus on bottle babies, sick animals or rehab animals.

If you are interested in a pet that is Foster to Adopt (FTA) please speak to one of our adoption counselors at the shelter to start the process.

FTA Qualifications:

  • Adoption policies apply to FTAs
  • You must be 18 or older
  • You must be a Las Vegas resident (the pet must return to Nevada SPCA for surgery or medical care before adoption is finalized)
  • You must fill out the Foster to Adopt application and be able to sign legal agreements once the application is approved for that pet
  • You will need a valid photo ID

FTA FAQs

Will I be able to take my FTA pet home the same day?

Yes, FTAs are considered fosters until the adoption is complete and will go home the same day after your application is approved.

Are there any fees or payments for FTAs?

Yes, you will prepay your adoption fee for that pet. It covers vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neuter and any medications that might be needed. If the pet needs to be returned before the adoption is complete you will recieve a full refund.

Can I take my FTA to an outside vet?

No, FTAs are still in the care of Nevada SPCA and must come see our veterinary staff for care and treatment.

Are the spay/neuter surgeries part of a voucher system?

No, Nevada SPCA will preform surgeries here at the shelter. You will have a dedicated surgery appointment before leaving with your FTA pet.

What will happen if I don’t show up for my surgery appointment?

It is important that you contact Nevada SPCA staff if you are not able to make it for your scheduled appointment and that you are setup with a new appointment. The adoption cannot be finalized until their surgery is complete.  The pet will be reclaimed by Nevada SPCA if multiple appointments are missed.

Adoption FAQs

There are a variety of reasons for pets to be accepted into our shelter. In some cases their family can no longer care for them due to lifestyle changes, or their previous owner has passed away. In other cases, animals are transferred to us from another shelter that needed our help.

As part of the adoption process, you will have an opportunity to sit down with an adoption counselor and discover more about that animal’s history as well as information about their health and personality as we have come to know it at the shelter.

Nevada SPCA is open to the public Monday-Friday 10:00AM-5:00PM and Saturday 10:00AM-6:00PM.

You can also give us a call at (702) 873.7722 if you need additional assistance.

Available pets change frequently, so please be sure to keep checking back.

You will be able to meet with the pet that you are interested in and speak with our staff to learn more about them. An adoption counselor can share information with you about that pet as we have come to know them in the shelter. They will also learn about your household, lifestyle, and expectations in order to ensure the best fit and successful match for you and your family. Please allow adequate time to have relevant conversations with our adoption counselor who can also answer any questions you may have about bringing your new pet home.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to adopt
  • Provide a valid photo ID with current address.
  • A meet-and-greet with any current household dogs is required for some dogs.
  • If you are renting, check your lease agreement for any pet restrictions including and not limited to size and breed.

When you adopt from Nevada SPCA, you are adopting a pet that has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and has received any necessary medical care. Services which can cost a new pet owner well over $400 per pet. When you choose to adopt, you are helping us to save lives. Our shelter is funded entirely by your generosity and support.

An older dog has usually already gone through the chewing, house soiling, and overactive baby stages. Adult cats don’t need you to “kitten-proof” the house and an older pet can usually adjust to your routine more quickly. Take it from us, they are especially grateful for their new life and to be part of a loving family. Keep an open mind when meeting a shelter pet

As part of the adoption process, you will have an opportunity to sit down with an adoption counselor who can provide information and guidance. We are always here to assist if you need any help after you adopt

During the adoption process, we’ll provide information and answer questions. We can provide a guide to your new pet which will be very helpful. Below is some very general information on common starter supplies you will need.

For a cat: a litter box, cat litter, litter scooper, cat toys, a sturdy scratching post with sisal, wood or cardboard for your cat to scratch and exercise, a cat bed and a pet brush, cat food.

For a dog: a collar or harness and leash, poop-bags for clean-up on walks, toys, a dog bed, a pet brush, and an ID tag, dog food.

For a rabbit or small animal: We can share more information when you visit the shelter about what you will need for the animal you select. Rabbits can be litter box trained and make great house pets. All animals enjoy toys, and you will need to purchase the appropriate housing, bedding and food.

We may have some supplies to share with you when you adopt, but availability varies.

As a shelter our resources are limited and we are do our best to direct our efforts toward the animals currently in our care. We ask adopters to seek veterinary care with their providers to establish a relationship and for continuity of care.

We will provide vet care records and disclose any health issues that we are aware of, but we cannot guarantee the health or temperament of any animal.

If you need information or help after you adopt your pet, we are here to help.
